Local opportunity to have your say

 

The NHS clinical commissioning groups in Leeds are looking at proposed changes to the way certain items are prescribed. We wanted to bring this to your attention so you are fully informed about the proposals, the reasons behind them and their plans to give people across the city the chance to give their feedback.

 

The proposals are to change the way in which they prescribe the following items:

  • ‘Over the counter’ medicines – they will not routinely fund a range of products on a prescription basis (such as sunscreens, camouflage creams, multivitamins, emollients, paracetamol and ibuprofen), except for long term conditions.
  • Branded medicines – they will routinely commission the prescribing of non-branded, generic medicines unless there is a medical reason.
  • Gluten-free products – They will not routinely fund gluten-free foods. 

It is currently costing Clinical Commissioning Groups in Leeds over £1.5 million a year to routinely prescribe these items. Given the current climate in the NHS there is an even greater need to ensure that services are working at their most effective; these proposed changes aim to help services run more efficiently.

It is important to note that they are not proposing to completely stop prescribing these items. Ultimately, it will be down to the individual practitioner working with their patient(s), to make an informed decision based on relevant clinical guidance to ensure that patients are receiving the best and most cost effective care.

Please find the link to the online survey that they will be using to inform and engage with patients and the public throughout the city; this will also be distributed as a printed document.

They are working closely with Leeds Involving People (LiP) and Engaging Voices to ensure that they engage with as many people as possible, including difficult to reach communities and those more directly affected by these changes (such as people with coeliac disease).
